Feather flags are the tall, blade-shaped choice for catching attention from a distance. Teardrop flags hold their shape in lighter wind and show a little more of the design. Rectangle flags show the whole artwork with no curved edge cut away. All three are printed in full colour, in three heights, one or two sides, and sold as a flag only or as a complete set.
The three shapes
A feather flag (also called a swooper, bow or flutter flag) is a long, narrow flag with a curved leading edge. It moves a lot in the wind, which is what draws the eye. Because the edge curves, part of the design near the pole and the top is lost, so keep your logo and message in the middle of the flag.
A teardrop flag has a rounded, drop-shaped top. The shape keeps more of the printed area visible and tends to stay readable in lighter wind. It is a popular pick for shopfronts, car yards and events.
A rectangle flag keeps square corners, so the whole design is visible. It suits logos with a border, longer text and detailed artwork. It is also the easiest to design for, because what you see on screen is what flies.
Sizes
Each style comes in small, medium and large:
- Feather flags: 2400mm, 3450mm and 4700mm.
- Teardrop flags: 2200mm, 3500mm and 4800mm.
- Rectangle flags: 2100mm, 3000mm and 4200mm.
Small flags suit a shop entrance or a market stall. Medium flags work for a driveway or a kerbside open home. Large flags are for roadside visibility, car yards and big events. These are overall heights including the pole.
What comes in the set
You can order the flag only if you already have a pole, or add the pole, ground spike and carry bag. Prices start at $133 for 1 (2.4m Small, lightweight fabric, single sided) for feather flags, $124 for 1 (2.2m Small, lightweight fabric, single sided) for teardrop flags and $155 for 1 (2.1m Small, lightweight fabric, single sided) for rectangle flags. The from price is the lowest order total, and it names the option it is for, so check the configurator for the size, fabric and set you want. The price shown is the total, we are not registered for GST, and delivery is priced by postcode and shown before you pay.
Fabric and sides
Lightweight fabric is our standard and suits most uses and double-sided flags. Silverback fabric has a blocking layer so the design does not show through, which looks better on a single-sided flag. On a single-sided flag the back shows the design reversed. Choose two sides if the flag will be seen from both directions, such as on a kerb.
Wind and care
Flags are for outdoor use, but take them down in strong wind, and expect the print to fade over time in strong sun. Push the spike into soft ground. We supply the spike, so for hard surfaces such as concrete you will need a base of your own, for example a weighted or water base from a hardware or display supplier. Larger flags catch more wind, so a medium flag is often the safer pick for an exposed spot.
Which one for which job
- Open homes and auctions: a medium feather or teardrop flag at the kerb, with the agency name and "Open" in the middle of the design.
- Shopfronts and car yards: large teardrop or feather flags along the frontage; rectangle flags if the logo has a border.
- Markets and stalls: a small flag marks your spot above the crowd and packs into its carry bag.
- Events and sport: large flags in your colours; use two sides if people walk past from both directions.
- Branded backdrops: if you need a wall of branding rather than a marker, look at fabric media walls.
Artwork
Supply a single-page PDF in CMYK at the finished size of the flag you choose (two pages for a double-sided flag, front then back), with fonts outlined or embedded. Keep text away from the curved edge and the pole side. Every file gets a free artwork check and an instant online proof, and orders are dispatched 3 business days after the artwork is approved.
